Dr. Ann M. Scott
Dr. Ann M. Scott

Candidate Biography:

Ann M. Scott is the Director of Cultural Resources at ACI Consulting, an environmental consulting firm located in Austin, Texas.  As Director, Dr. Scott oversees all operations involving cultural resources for the company, including supervising personnel and managing projects.  She recently earned her PhD in Latin American Studies from The University of Texas at Austin.  In addition to a successful career in cultural resource management, Dr. Scott has a long record of conducting research in Latin America and specializes in Mesoamerican cave archeology studying the use of caves in a ritual context.  Her first serious caving began in Guatemala in 1993 working on the Petexbatun Regional Cave Survey project along side Texas Cavers.  By mid-1996, she moved to Texas and began working in caves in the central Texas region.  Dr. Scott currently sits on the Board of Directors of the Texas Speleological Survey, is the Secretary of the TCMA, and is a member of the Texas Speleological Association.  She resides in south Austin.

Candidate Statement:

I am excited to be nominated for the Board of Directors of TCMA.  I see this as an important opportunity to be part of an organization where I can both offer ideas and learn from incumbents.  I currently sit on the Board of Directors of the Texas Speleological Survey, and also on the Board of Directors for the American Cultural Resources Association (ACRA), a professional trade association that is the voice and support of cultural resource management at the national level.  Besides currently serving as Secretary of TCMA, my other experience with organizations includes sitting on the Organizing Committee for the 15th International Congress of Speleology, which was held in Texas in 2009.  I feel that I have broad experience in various organizations that I can bring to the table as a sitting Board member of TCMA.  I see the role of a Board member as being two-fold.  One is to serve the organization to the best of your ability in the best interest of the organization.  The other is to be a leader in helping to meet the needs of the organization.  When the Nomination Committee contacted me, I saw this as a valuable opportunity to work effectively with other Board members to fulfill the mission of TCMA by bringing enthusiasm and dedication at the governing level to better serve the needs of the membership.

Jill Orr

Jill Orr

Candidate Biography:

I am a marketing communications professional with experience in both oil & gas and technology manufacturing industries.  Originally from Michigan, Iíve been living in Texas for almost 30 years and in San Antonio for just over three.  Although relatively new to caving, it has become a very important part of my life and was something I had made efforts to do since I was a little girl.  Aside from caving, I still make time for ballet, one of my long time passions.

Candidate Statement:

There is value in what I can bring to the TCMA because I have come to care passionately about caving, caves and even other cavers!  I have been a TCMA volunteer with my time and design skills for the past three years; so I bring a ready understanding of the TCMA and its goals, along with good working relationships with other TCMA board members.  Transition from volunteer member to board member would be pretty seamless as I will continue to use my communication skills to help TCMA educate the public on caves and help keep caves available to cavers.

Mallory Mayeux

Mallory Mayeux

Candidate Biography:

Hello!  My name is Mallory Mayeux and I am running for a position on the TCMA Board of Directors.  As a native of Louisiana, I did not grow up caving, but went on my first "wild" cave trip while working at Mammoth Cave National Park in 2004.  I volunteered with the Cave Research Foundation the following summer, and have been hooked ever since.  Since moving to Houston in 2008, I have been actively caving.  It's a bit of a road trip to most caves in Texas, but well worth it!  I am very involved in the caving scene here, having served as secretary of the Greater Houston Grotto for the last 2 years and am currently on the planning committee for the upcoming NSS Board of Governor's meeting we're hosting.  I am also a member of the TCMA, TSA, CRF and NSS.

Candidate Statement:

Ever since I've been caving in Texas, I've enjoyed visiting TCMA preserves.  My very first caving trip here was a visit to Robber Baron, and my most recent trip (this weekend) was to Deep/Punkin.  I think having an organization that acquires/preserves caves is a must for our community, and I bring an enthusiasm for the mission and a fresh perspective to the TCMA board.  I think the TCMA has been pulled in a lot of directions over the last few years, but ultimately, the focus of the board needs to stay on acquiring and preserving properties for members to explore, preserve, and enjoy.  I'd like to be a part of this effort, and appreciate your support.  Thank you!

Michael Cicherski

Michael Cicherski

Candidate Biography:

Michael has been caving since the mid-1980s.  He has caved in Montana, Texas, Mexico and New Mexico and was part of the Huautla project that has been written about by Bill Stone.  Currently Michael is spending his time on two projects in the Texas Hill Country.  He was Treasurer for the 15th International Convention of Speleology (also the 2009 NSS convention) in partnership with his wife Melissa.  He is also the Treasurer for the TSA.  Michael is also a NSS fellow.

Candidate Statement:

If elected to a director position, Michael has agreed to be the treasurer for the TCMA, a position which has been historically difficult to fill.

Wesley Schumacher

Candidate Biography:

Born in Austin, TX. Grew up in and went to high school in Bastrop, TX.  Attended UT at Jackson School of Geosciences and received a bachelorís in Environmental Hydrogeology in 2007.  I have always had a keen interest in geology.  Even as a kid in Bastrop, rock hounding was a major passion for me.  I walked several creeks after major rain events and floods and had a collection of petrified wood.  At 14 I started caving and was soon elected the youngest ever president of the UT grotto caving club in Austin.  Of which I am still an active member.  I have caved in Mexico, New Mexico, California, Montana, Hawaii and Texas; including a support role in the filming of the BBC documentary on caves for the Planet Earth series.  I have numerous hobbies including brewing, blacksmithing and beekeeping and currently reside in south Austin.

Candidate Statement:

I understand that from time to time there is a need in our community for the capable and willing to step up and do their fair share within our various organizations for the greater good of Texas cavers.  I for one have reaped the numerous benefits of the caver community for over a decade now, and find myself willing and able to give back.  I have always thought the TCMA was one of the more progressive organizations in Texas caving and I fervently believe that the best manner in which to promote our goals and preserve our favorite natural resource is to acquire and preserve lands with caves on them.  Direct ownership and management is the most effective and lasting way to truly conserve and preserve land within the state of Texas.  I humbly offer my abilities in whatever manner they may be useful to the TCMA.
