Jay Jorden

Candidate Biography:

I have been a caver since 1971, starting with the University of Texas Grotto.  I'm a Fellow and life member of the National Speleological Society.  I joined the Texas Cave Management Association in the 1980s and have previously held a number of leadership positions with the conservation organization, including president and board member.  Several years ago, I rotated out of the TCMA board to help enable others to participate and provide their perspectives on organizational priorities and strategic goals.  I am now eager to return to the board, helping accelerate the conservancy's growth and driving new acquisitions of cave properties.

For the TCMA, I founded the organization's first membership publication, the TCMA Activities Newsletter, and helped research and implement the acquisition of Whirlpool Cave in Travis County as one of the organization's first preserves.  With the NSS, I have served as an officer of the Cave Conservation and Management Section and founded that organization's newsletter, the Cave Conservationist.  I have also served as director of the Cave Vandalism Deterrence Reward Commission and chairman of the NSS Public Relations Committee.

I would really appreciate your support. Thanks!

R.D. Milhollin

RD Milhollin
R.D. Milhollin

Candidate Biography:

My first caving trip was in 1968 to Grutas Garcia near Monterrey, but at ten years old I wasn't ready to start caving seriously.  I became hooked on while on a college outdoors club trip to River Styx Cave.   Diving got in the way for a while, but my growing interest in cavern, cave and eventually sump diving led me back to an interest in air-filled caving. Since then I have caved in Texas and the surrounding states, California, Florida, the Ozarks, TAG, the Virginias, New England, southern and northern Mexico, Yucatan and Quintana Roo, Peru and Bolivia, Belgium, Spain, and the Canary Islands.  My main interests in caving today are helping to better understand the Arbuckle karst in Oklahoma and getting back to caving in northern Mexico.

Candidate Statement:

I held several offices with the former Maverick Grotto including a stint as newsletter editor, and was one of the founders of the Cowtown Grotto where I served as secretary and again, published an award-winning newsletter.  I am a current member of the NSS, TSA and TCMA.  I served the NSS as a member of the planning committee which I chaired for three years.  During my tenure the committee examined many aspects of US caving, and a key problem we identified was access to caves.  The TCMA and the other US cave conservancies are the organizations that are addressing this issue.  This is where it's happening, and I would like to help.
